Number One With A Bullet (Teaser)

Being screened at the Urban World Film Festival. Directed by Jim Dziura.

Synopses

Many of today’s biggest rap stars have something in common besides successful careers: they’ve all been shot and have lived to rap about it. Their tales of gunplay, their reactions to the violence, and their changed attitudes after having survived near-death experiences are varied and always compelling.

NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET takes the viewer deep into the psyche of these incredibly talented artists, who share a common thread: the permanent physical scars from the bullets that almost took them out and the corresponding emotional scars that affect them in profound and personal ways.

FILM INFO: NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET (World Premiere)
DIRECTOR: Jim Dziura
WRITER: Jim Dziura & Joshua Krause
PRODUCER: Joshua Krause
CINEMATOGRAPHER: Jeff Ballman
FEATURING: Young Buck, Ice Cube, Mos Def, KRS-One, Obie Trice, Prodigy, Damon Dash, Fat Joe, Jerry Heller, Nikki Giovanni, 40 Glocc, and The Last Mr. Bigg

Illmatic Being Turned Into A Book

Hip Hop scholar, author and activist Dr. Michael Eric Dyson announced yesterday that he is currently writing a book on Nas‘ debut album Illmatic. The 1994 release received the coveted five mic rating from The Source magazine, and is considered by many, to be the greatest single Hip Hop album of all times.

Every song on Illmatic will be analyzed, interpreted and then re-articulated in a kind of intellectual sense from his own base in Hip Hop and we’re trying to deal with that seriously,Dyson told AllHipHop.com Wednesday.

Late Wednesday, Nas‘ mentor, and producer of three of the album’s 10 tracks, Large Professor, spoke on the significance of his work going from the musical to the literary world.

It means a lot. That’s what we were working for though,” revealed the musical creator of “Halftime,” “One Time 4 Your Mind” and “It Ain’t Hard To Tell,” two of which were album singles. Large Professor added to HipHopDX, “It’s finally paying off. It was a lot of hard work put into getting that album how it was – even getting Nas to that point. It’s finally payin’ off. Sometimes it’s a delayed reaction with things. Back in the days, my father would tell me, ‘You’re ahead of your time.’ I didn’t know what that meant. Sometimes that’s a good thing and a bad thing. You get a grasp on it, and you understand what it is, and you realize it.

From first appearing on 1991′s “Live At The Barbeque” from Large Professor‘s then-group Main Source, the unit spent nearly three years readying the debut, which finally achieved platinum status a decade later in 2004. “That was a lot of power, a lot of energy that went into that. That wasn’t just [a year-long project], that was years in the making. The power is there. It’s still alive.

According to Amazon, Dyson‘s book, formerly titled Born To Use Mics: Reading Nas’ Illmatic, is planned for January 2009 publication on Basic Civitas Books.

Robin Thicke Denied Cover Because of Race?

In a recent interview with Billboard, R&B singer Robin Thicke sounded off on some of his troubles in the music industry—specifically with Vibe magazine.

Thicke, who rose to industry prominence in 2006 under the watchful eye of Pharrell and Star Trak Records was denied the cover of the monthly publication because he’s white.

“When I did a recent interview with Vibe magazine I asked, ‘Why can’t I get the cover? This is a magazine I love. If there’s one magazine that I’d want to be on the cover of, it’s Vibe,’” Thicke said of the situation.

The response he received was startling.

“Their response was they don’t have white artists on the cover; that the only white artist they’ve had on the cover was Eminem. I guess if that’s what it is, it is what it is. And I respect that because I live in a house with a black woman.”

Despite the incident, Thicke is taking the trials and tribulations in stride, refusing to condemn the decision of the magazine as reverse racism.

“I won’t use the word ‘racism.’ I will say it’s a tough — but rewarding — fight,” he says.

At the end of the day, Thicke says he will continue to do what he does best: make music that transcends color lines. For this, he cites the late Bob Marley.

“You can’t always expect people to be as color-blind or open-minded as you want. What you can do is keep giving your heart and soul, like Bob Marley did. His music became so overwhelmingly loving; it was a relentless love in a sense. Keep beating them down with love and they can’t stop you.”

Robin Thicke is currently working on his third solo effort, Something Else which will hit shelves September 30. His first single is titled “Magic.”
