The M&M Eminem Portrait

Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! has acquired a portrait of Eminem made entirely out of M&M’s candy. The portrait, made out of more than 1,000 individual peices, was made by Florida resident Enrique Ramos who used over 8 pounds of chocolate to capture Marshall Mathers in a 40″x30″ piece. “Our customers have a pretty good eye for art. They won’t be disappointed by Eminem in M&M’s,” Tim O’Brien, VP of Communications for Ripley’s Believe It or Not! said, “This thing looks good enough to eat.” The Eminem, M&M, portrait will hang along side other weird art pieces like the picture of Princess Diana made from lint and a shot of Micheal Jackson made from gumballs.

Synopses

Many of today’s biggest rap stars have something in common besides successful careers: they’ve all been shot and have lived to rap about it. Their tales of gunplay, their reactions to the violence, and their changed attitudes after having survived near-death experiences are varied and always compelling.

NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET takes the viewer deep into the psyche of these incredibly talented artists, who share a common thread: the permanent physical scars from the bullets that almost took them out and the corresponding emotional scars that affect them in profound and personal ways.

Illmatic Being Turned Into A Book

Hip Hop scholar, author and activist Dr. Michael Eric Dyson announced yesterday that he is currently writing a book on Nas‘ debut album Illmatic. The 1994 release received the coveted five mic rating from The Source magazine, and is considered by many, to be the greatest single Hip Hop album of all times.

Every song on Illmatic will be analyzed, interpreted and then re-articulated in a kind of intellectual sense from his own base in Hip Hop and we’re trying to deal with that seriously,Dyson told AllHipHop.com Wednesday.

Late Wednesday, Nas‘ mentor, and producer of three of the album’s 10 tracks, Large Professor, spoke on the significance of his work going from the musical to the literary world.

It means a lot. That’s what we were working for though,” revealed the musical creator of “Halftime,” “One Time 4 Your Mind” and “It Ain’t Hard To Tell,” two of which were album singles. Large Professor added to HipHopDX, “It’s finally paying off. It was a lot of hard work put into getting that album how it was – even getting Nas to that point. It’s finally payin’ off. Sometimes it’s a delayed reaction with things. Back in the days, my father would tell me, ‘You’re ahead of your time.’ I didn’t know what that meant. Sometimes that’s a good thing and a bad thing. You get a grasp on it, and you understand what it is, and you realize it.

From first appearing on 1991′s “Live At The Barbeque” from Large Professor‘s then-group Main Source, the unit spent nearly three years readying the debut, which finally achieved platinum status a decade later in 2004. “That was a lot of power, a lot of energy that went into that. That wasn’t just [a year-long project], that was years in the making. The power is there. It’s still alive.

According to Amazon, Dyson‘s book, formerly titled Born To Use Mics: Reading Nas’ Illmatic, is planned for January 2009 publication on Basic Civitas Books.

Dr. Dre’s Son Found Dead

Andre Romelle Young Jr., the son of rapper and pioneering hip-hop producer Dr. Dre, was found dead in his Woodland Hills, California, home Saturday morning, according to Dre’s representative. He was 20 years old.

An autopsy was conducted on Young’s body Monday, but a cause of death has not yet been determined, pending the results of a toxicology report, a representative for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office told MTV News. The coroner’s rep confirmed that an Andre Romelle Young Jr. passed away Saturday, but was uncertain if he was Dre’s son; Dre’s rep confirmed that information Tuesday (August 26).

Young was discovered in his bed at around 10:30 a.m. Saturday by his mother, who attempted to rouse him, the coroner’s spokesperson said. Young was unresponsive, so she called paramedics, who responded to the scene. After their efforts to revive him failed, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the coroner’s spokesperson, Young had spent the previous evening with friends. His mother told police that he’d returned home Saturday at around 5:30 a.m., and that she’d heard him in his bedroom. Police said they did not suspect foul play.

A spokesperson for Dr. Dre issued the following statement Tuesday on the rapper’s behalf: “Dr. Dre is mourning the loss of his son Andre Young Jr. Please respect his family’s grief and privacy at this time.”

An outpouring of support flooded Dr. Dre’s MySpace page in the wake of his son’s passing, with fans offering their condolences and wishing the family strength. “Our prayers are with you and your family,” wrote one fan.

R.I.P. to a King Of Comedy

Emmy, Golden Globe, and Grammy-nominated actor and comedian Bernie Mac died today (August 9) at the age of 50, CNN.com reports.

Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital,” said his publicist, Danica Smith, in a statement from Los Angeles, California.

His publicist said no other details were available, and that his family’s privacy be respected. She also revelaed that the pneumonia was not related to the comedian’s sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease; the condition apparently went into remission in 2005.

Mac’s comedy career at age eight, with a standup performance at a church dinner. Eventually, he took his act to comedy clubs in Chicago at age 20, in 1977.

He began his film career with a small role in Damon Wayans Mo’ Money in 1992. Since then, he has appeared in Spike Lee’s 1996 drama Get on the Bus, the Ocean’s Eleven series, and numerous other films.

Bernie Mac also had a self-titled television show, which aired more than 100 episodes from 2001 to 2006. “The Bernie Mac Show,” which told the story of a man raising his sister’s three children, won a Peabody Award in 2002. The judges wrote that the sitcom transcended “race and class while lifting viewers with laughter, compassion — and cool.

But television handcuffs you, man,” said Mac in 2001 Associated Press interview. “Now everyone telling me what I CAN’T do, what I CAN say, what I SHOULD do, and asking, ‘Are blacks gonna be mad at you? Are whites gonna accept you?”

Mac was also a part of the critically acclaimed comedy album and movie The Original Kings of Comedy, in which he co-starred with Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Cedric The Entertainer. The album garnered a Grammy nomination for best comedy album in 2001.

In 2007 during an interview on CBS “Late Show” with Dave Letterman, Mac revealed that he had plans to retire soon. “I’m going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit,” said Mac to Letterman. “I missed a lot of things, you know. I was a street performer for two years. I went into clubs in 1977.”

Mac survived by a daughter, Je’Niece, and wife, Rhonda McCullough. Je’Niece has a daughter, Jasmine. Link
